Life

Back online

Hard disk failure, becoming a father and some nasty lung embolus sh**t has kept me offline and my server in a broken state. (No it’s not my lungs) This is actually my first hard disk failure ever so I was kinda taken by it. Tough I managed to extract the blog database under some heavy cpr. You can say my backup strategy was... eh... non existing. Anyway it’s up and running now in a virtual environment for the time being, until I get my hands on some hardware.

Dropped off the blog radar

Uhm, 1,5 months since my last post... Not good, I really have to shape things up! I've been to busy for my own good. Anyway, as I mentioned earlier my team made it to the Swedish Championship Playoffs this year (for the first time) and things went well! We came home from Helsingborg (the city that hosted the event) with a bronze medal! Nice! Here are all the results (in Swedish).

A programmer...

"A programmer is a device that turns coffie into code!" :D

Lawsuit-o-rama

What's up with all the idiotic lawsuits now. I'm not primarly taking about the microsoft-google situation. Last week I read that Creating was pressing charges against Apple iPod for something and now Symantec sues Microsoft in an attempt to delay Vista. Theese kind of lawsuits really pisses me off. Creative should just have made there zen-player a better product than the iPod. So, wise up and put your money into RnD instaead of all these tedious lawsuits!

Productivity in Outlook 2003

This Monday I attended a course on how to work more effective in Outlook. The course is based on the philosophy in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. So it's not all about Outlook YOU have to change some things to :). The first thing we did when cranking up Outlook was to remove all "you've got mail" sounds and pop-up boxes etc. I only had them off for two days now but man do I like it! I'm able to work more efficient without these interruptions. Cause when that box popped up I just had...

Shipping and release schedules

In software today tighter release cycles seems to be the tune. To release something early to a targeted group and then continuous releasing updates, fixes and features in short cycles. Take Visual Studio for example that had beta 1, beta 2, RTM and Service Pack 1 targeted for release in the third quarter of 2006. Office 12 and Windows Vista are other examples of this. The beta 1 release is out ...

Presentation Anti-Patterns

Came across Jef Atwood's post How Not to Give a Presentation today. Wich I got to say is both hilarious and truthful. Among the highligts is "Begin by establishing how impressing you are", "Read every word on you slides" (reminds me of an old high school teacher I had) & "Don't take any questions".

A poor mans guide to avoiding road rage

I usually drive to work a couple of days a week (and commute the rest). Slow traffic is a big problem trying to get through Stockholm in rush hour and standing still in traffic jams can be incredibly frustrating and not very good for the hart. But I found a cure for my self and it is: Audio books! Listening to a good book really keeps me...

Weird Sport

Sooo, in the subtitle for this blog I make a promise of expressing myself about "weird sports". Haven't been much of that so far, so it's about time. It's one sport in particular I'm talking about: Underwater rugby. I spent this weekend in Mullsjö playing just that. Saturday was spent playing two games in the elit series and Sunday was a start up camp for national team...

Without a Cell Phone - The Horror

For the first time in about eight years I'm without a cell phone. It's only for the week between jobs, but man do I realize the level of addiction I'm at. It's scary how much of ones life that is dependent on being able to communicate with people at almost any time.

Vildand (In swedish)

Hur tillagar...

On to new and big challenges

Today (hmmm, it's after midnight and I really should be in bed) it's two months left until I leave my current position on Qbranch to start working for Microsoft. Then I've been with Qbranch for almost 3 years. At Microsoft Sweden I will be entering their consulting unit by the name Services. Where I will work as a senior consultant in Application development. It's a huge...

Is the answer to life, god and everything really 42? Or is it 47

I have a friend of mine who claims that the number 47 appears more frequently than any other number in our surroundings. So I've done a test. I picked number 47 and number 53 (at random) to see if there was any truth to it. And to my big surprise it was! 47 is in a big lead. Yeah, I know it's probably just my mind playing tricks on me. But still it's ...

Back to reality

So, I'm back from the wonderful beaches of Isla de Margarita. Still jet-lagged and facing a dull reality again (I start working Monday). The trip was great! Here comes some words of wisdom if you're traveling there: Dollars is the shit, bring loads of it and don't count on finding an ATM around the corner as I did. ...

Newlyweds

After months of planning the big day finally arrived, and it could not have been better! I got married this saturday in Ransäter and it was perfecet. Now we're off to Isla de Margarita on a little wedding trip. Hopefully I can post an update from there, if not I'll report when I get back!

Swedish summer

This summer really sucked in Sweden, especially Stockholm. I took a picture earlier this summer that sums it up pretty good, just had to share it! -Nick

What makes a good consultant?

A couple of weeks ago I found my self in a situation where someone asked me "what does it mean to be a consultant to you?". Not at all anticipating the question I answered without really thinking and went on about top of the line technical knowledge etc. Walking away from this situation I started thinking about my answer and what I think makes a good consultant. And I don't think...
